Hump Day Highlights: Collaborative Training at Yappara House

This Wednesday evening on 20 Nov 2024, Yappara House hosted a transdisciplinary training session led by speech pathologist Ruyi Tong from RT Speech and Hearing and occupational therapist Seb Della Maddalena from Haven. Staff came together after hours to deepen their understanding of how to support communication, sensory processing needs, and play.

Here’s what made the session stand out:

🌟 Hands-On Strategy Practice

Ruyi and Seb ensured the training wasn’t just about listening—it was about doing. Staff had the chance to step away from their busy schedules and dedicate focused time to practicing strategies they could use in their day-to-day work. This active approach helped solidify concepts and build confidence.

🌟 A Father’s Perspective

One memorable part of the session was watching a video of a child interacting with their father, who had joined the training to share his perspective. This not only provided a valuable insight into the child’s communication style but also helped staff connect with the family’s lived experiences.

🌟 Value for the Whole Team

The format allowed all staff at the centre to participate, avoiding the usual juggling act of managing children while learning. This collective experience maximised the impact of the session, ensuring everyone was on the same page and ready to implement new ideas.

🌟 Creative Collaboration

The session wrapped up with a lively brainstorming session, where staff, guided by Ruyi and Seb, developed playful and practical ideas tailored to the child’s sensory and communication preferences. It was a fantastic way to foster teamwork and ensure the training translated into actionable strategies.

Both Ruyi and Seb were impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of the Yappara House staff. The evening was not just a learning opportunity but also a chance to re-energise and unite the team in their shared goal of creating a supportive environment for children.

Hump day well spent!
